And then… the big day finally arrived!!! We filled the dining hall at Hull-House, had a lovely lunch, personally thanked Pat Quinn (Illinois’ Lieutenant Governor) & congresswoman Barbara Flynn Currie (Democratic Majority Leader, Illinois House of Representatives) for their support, & heard wonderful presentations by Lucy Knight & Jean Bethke Elshtain. Both Chicago Public Radio (WBEZ) & Chicago Public Television (WTTW) covered “Jane Addams Day” on their local news magazines, & newpapers from Carbondale to Quincy to Rockford covered the day as well (even tho absolutely nothing appeared in either the Trib or the Sun-Times).
My deep appreciation to Kim Benziger, chair of AAUW-Illinois’ Jane Addams Day committee, as well as all my fellow committee members: Nicole Benziger, Kay Hurt, Mary McNulty, Alice Smith, Lori Switzer, Barbara Thomas, & Barbara Zeitz. Thanks also to Lisa Lee (Director of the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum) & the entire staff, as well as all those who contributed their time &/or money to this cause. Finally, thanks to my friend Monique Handley for this photo.
