Charlotte Zwerin Day

This morning I awoke to NPR’s Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep asking filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko to recommend a few DVD favorites.  She named four: Ordinary People, Chinatown, Gimme Shelter, & Y Tu Mama Tambien.

At first I was bereft: “Lisa,” I said outloud.  “Can’t you think of ANY films by women to recommend?”  But being “a glass half-full” kinda gal, I determined to look up the credits in IMDb before throwing myself out the window.  And I’m so glad I did because hey, guess what:  brothers Albert & David Maysles actually had a female collaborator on Gimme Shelter: Charlotte Zwerin!

And here’s more great news, Charlotte Zwerin has the solo directing credit on one of my all-time favorite music docs: Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser.

So I’m declaring today “Charlotte Zwerin Day.”  Hooray 🙂
