In a dramatic turn for Melissa McCarthy (not the first, but lauded as so), Can You Ever Forgive Me? tells the story of fledgling author Lee Israel and the illegal lengths she went to for extra cash and a sense of purpose. The Marielle Heller-directed drama based on Israel’s memoir of the same name is a no-makeup-Oscar-buzz-generator showcase for McCarthy, but its anti-hero protagonist isn’t much of a protagonist at all. Melissa McCarthy co-writes and stars in Life of the Party as a recent divorcee who goes back to school to finish her degree at the same college her daughter attends. McCarthy’s third creative collaboration with her husband, director Ben Falcone, is funnier and fresher than their previous work together (Tammy, The Boss) thanks to its supporting cast and surprising depth. The Kitchen (2019), directed by Andrea Berloff, is an American shoot ‘em up film starring Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss. Set back in the 1970’s during New York City’s crime wave, three women become leaders of the local Irish mob after their husbands are arrested. Reviving the mob after incompetent rule, they restore […]
In the ensemble-mockumentary vein of 2000’s Best In Show, Cook Off! is a comedy about a cooking contest, in which a group of finalists compete for the million dollar prize. For a movie that depends on light wit, it doesn’t help that many of the jokes fall flat. (AEL: 2.5/5)
Why is Ghostbusters 2016 so important? Thoughts from Peier Tracy Shen There are of course more important reasons to watch GB16. And that’s kind of the elephant in the room, especially with the recent news about Leslie Jones, who was subjected to twitter abuses. The Internet trolling (rampant, in fact, ever since the movie was announced) only reflects […]
I don’t know what it’s like to have grown up with the original Ghostbusters, but I do know what it’s like to love a movie for its pure fun and to take comfort in going back to it. To me, that feeling explains the excitement surrounding Paul Feig’s 2016 Ghostbusters, a fittingly zany new story […]
If you ask me who I’m gonna call after seeing Ghostbusters, my answer will be Kate McKinnon. Every time. (GEP: 4/5) Social Media Manager Georgiana E. Presecky Hooray for Kate McKinnon! The Saturday Night Live cast member steals Paul Feig and Katie Dippold’s remake of the beloved 1984 original. Her delightfully whacky engineer, Jillian Holtzman, is a […]
I ain’t afraid of no ghost girls. Katie Dippold and Paul Feig’s remake of Ivan Reitman’s ‘80s classic offers up a funny, enjoyable ride through the green-slimed streets of New York City. Although the special effects create a fun movie-going experience, it’s the real-life comedians and surprising cameos that make Ghostbusters a fun holdover during Saturday […]
Ghostbusters 2016 (aka GB16) is manna from heaven in the multiplex dessert. Most women don’t want to live in a world without men, or be “better” than men (whatever that might mean); we just want equality. Equality means telling our stories, making fools of ourselves, and cheering women on when they grab for the brass ring. Equality means more representation […]
Melissa McCarthy is back as screenwriter and star of The Boss. Thoroughly entertaining, The Boss follows successful mogul “Michelle Darnell” (McCarthy) who is dethroned from her seat atop industry when she is sentenced to prison for insider trading. When she is released Michelle must rebuild her empire, but this time around she must think outside […]
Oh, my. Regular readers know I wasn’t a big fan of Bridesmaids, but I liked The Heat a whole lot. So in spite of the previews (which I saw again and again for weeks on end), I was hoping for the best. Alas Tammy is an embarrassing mess. It honestly breaks my heart to say […]
Director Susan Seidelman creates a crowd-pleaser anchored by Brooke Shields as a woman who gathers her gal pals together to raise money for a mobile mammography van. “Beth” saves herself by doing good for her community, & even someone as dumb about basketball as I am can still feel the excitement of the win. (JLH: 3.5/5) […]

Remember “Gracie Hart,” the adorable character Sandra Bullock played in MISS CONGENIALITY way back when? Well a dozen years & one Oscar later, Bullock is remarkably the same & Melissa McCarthy makes a great partner. Sweet, ditzy, thoroughly enjoyable screenplay by Katie Dippold, with a lot of the charm that director Paul Feig gave to […]
Congratulations to the winners of this year’s 2011 achievement awards from the Women Film Critics Circle — of which I am a proud member! Unless otherwise noted, the award goes to the director on behalf of the entire cast & crew. BEST MOVIE BY A WOMAN [TIE]: The Iron Lady (Phyllida Lloyd)/We Need To Talk […]
